Julian of Norwich was a 14th century mystic and anchoress who lived in a cell attached to a church in Norwich England. During this time of plague, political unrest and spiritual turmoil, Julian would be visited by women searching for guidance through these dark times.
While on her deathbed, Julian had a series of visions of God, which she wrote about in her book, Revelations of Devine Love. Julian wrote of God as an all- loving entity; full of joy and compassion. Sin, she wrote, is a necessary path towards self- knowledge. She saw Christ as a mother figure, explaining that the bond between Mother and Child is the truest of all connections on earth.
In this three panel piece, I became intrigued by what Julian may have felt and saw as she spiritually and compassionately guided women through the hardships of life during the 14th century in England.
